One kWh (kilowatt-hour) is the energy used by a 1,000-watt load running for one hour — a fairly efficient 1.5-ton inverter AC uses roughly 1–1.3 units per hour on a hot day, which is why a handful of extra AC hours in a billing cycle can visibly shift the units-consumed figure and, if it crosses a slab boundary, the total bill by more than the extra units alone would suggest.
If a meter has a multiplier (common on three-phase commercial or industrial connections with current-transformer metering), the raw reading difference is multiplied by that factor to get the billed units — check for a "Multiplying Factor" or "MF" field on those bills before comparing the units figure to a raw reading difference yourself.
