Solar Financing & Leasing Options

How bank loans, leases, installer instalment plans and green financing affect ownership, warranty responsibility and payback.

Know who owns the system

Under a lease or loan, the asset may belong to the lender or leasing company until payoff, even though it sits on your roof and appears on your electricity connection. Warranty claims and net-metering paperwork should follow whatever the contract specifies—confirm in writing who is named as the system owner on the net-metering application, since DISCOs generally register the agreement against the account holder, not necessarily the financier.

Compare total cost of ownership including insurance, early repayment penalties, and what happens to the loan or lease if you sell the property before payoff.

Common routes used in Pakistan

Options typically available include commercial bank loans (some banks have run renewable-energy or green financing windows with preferential terms at various times—check current offers directly with banks, as schemes change), installer-arranged instalment plans, and straightforward cash purchase. Leasing structures are less common for small residential systems than for larger commercial installations.

Whichever route you choose, ask for the effective annual cost (including markup, processing fees, and any insurance bundled into the plan) rather than comparing only the advertised monthly instalment, so you can fairly weigh it against a cash-purchase payback estimate.

What to check before signing

Confirm the manufacturer and installer warranty terms survive a change in financing arrangement, get the full repayment schedule in writing, and clarify whether the financier's name will appear on any government or DISCO paperwork in a way that could complicate future net-metering transfers if you move house.
