Respect DC and AC zones
Solar arrays produce live DC whenever the sun shines—even on a cloudy day—so only qualified installers should open combiner boxes or touch string wiring. AC-side work connecting the inverter output to your household circuit also needs a licensed electrician, since it interacts with your existing wiring and the DISCO meter.
Know where your inverter's AC isolator and DC isolators are located, but do not operate or bypass them without training; isolators are meant to be used by installers during service, not as a routine on/off switch for daily use.
Warning signs that mean stop and call a professional
Burning smells, visible scorch marks, buzzing or crackling sounds near the inverter or combiner box, repeated fault codes, or a DC arc (a small flash or spark at a connector) are all signs to stop using the system and call your installer immediately rather than investigating yourself.
Loose or corroded connectors, damaged cable insulation, or rodent chew marks on cabling should also be treated as urgent—these are common causes of DC arc-fault fires in rooftop installations worldwide, not just a cosmetic issue.
What an emergency shutdown means
Most residential inverters have a documented shutdown sequence: typically switch off the AC isolator first, then the DC isolator, and never assume the array is de-energised just because the inverter display is off—exposed DC conductors can remain live in daylight even with the inverter powered down.
Keep your installer's emergency contact number, and if there is ever a fire risk, treat it like any electrical fire: do not use water, and inform first responders that rooftop solar is present, since it may still be live during daylight hours even after the main supply is cut.
