Peak Hours & Solar Self-Consumption

Why evening peak tariffs still bite when solar peaks at noon, and how load shifting and small storage change what you pay.

The timing mismatch

Solar production is strongest during daylight hours, roughly 9am to 4pm depending on season and roof orientation. Many households spike demand after sunset when cooling and cooking load rises—exactly when expensive on-peak or TOU blocks may apply on some connections.

Shifting flexible loads (water heating, washing machines, pool pumps, daytime ironing) into solar hours can raise self-consumption without adding a single extra panel. The value of a kWh you use directly from your own array is usually higher than the credit you would get for exporting it, so timing matters as much as system size.

What self-consumption actually changes on your bill

Self-consumption is the share of solar energy you use as it is generated, instead of exporting it to the grid. A higher self-consumption ratio generally means fewer units imported at your normal tariff and less reliance on however your DISCO values exported units—which can be less favourable than the retail rate you avoid by using solar directly.

Two households with identical panel counts can see different savings purely because one runs its geyser, iron, and washing machine mid-day while the other runs them in the evening. Before assuming a bigger system is the answer, check whether load scheduling alone would move the needle.

Practical scheduling ideas

Common candidates for shifting into daylight hours include electric water heating, laundry, dishwashing, ironing, and charging power banks, cordless tools, or an EV if you have one. Kitchen appliances used for meal prep can sometimes move earlier without disrupting routines.

Smart plugs or simple timers on your inverter/monitoring app can automate this. Some hybrid inverters let you set priority rules (e.g., charge a small battery buffer first, then export). If your household's evening peak is unavoidable—cooking dinner, air conditioning after sunset—a battery buffer sized for a few key evening hours can do more for comfort than an oversized solar array chasing exports it may not be credited for at full value.
